When comparing lowboy trailers, one of the first decisions is how the trailer will load and what neck configuration best fits your operation.
Fixed-neck, mechanical detachable, and hydraulic detachable lowboys can all move heavy equipment, but they differ significantly in how they load, how they're operated, and the applications they're best suited for. Extendable configurations add another consideration when the load requires additional deck length.
The right choice comes down to more than tonnage. Loaded deck height, ground clearance, main-deck length, axle configuration, loading frequency, and the equipment you're moving can all influence which setup makes the most sense.
The best place to start isn't with a manufacturer. It's with the load.
"Lowboy" covers a broad category of heavy-haul trailers designed to carry equipment and freight at a lower deck height than a standard flatbed or step deck.
Within that category, configurations can vary significantly.
A construction operation moving excavators and dozers has different requirements than a heavy-haul carrier moving cranes, transformers, or other oversize and overweight freight across multiple states. One operation may prioritize a straightforward loading process, while another may need a lower loaded deck height, additional axles, or the ability to load from the front several times a day.
Those differences are why neck configuration matters.
A fixed-neck lowboy has a permanently attached neck. Because the neck doesn't detach for loading, equipment is generally loaded from the rear using the trailer's designed loading system.
The advantage is a straightforward configuration. For operations that can load their equipment effectively from the rear, there may be no reason to add the complexity of a detachable neck.
The tradeoff is flexibility.
Equipment with limited ground clearance can be more difficult to load when the approach angle is steeper. That makes the dimensions and characteristics of the equipment just as important as its weight.
A fixed neck can be a practical choice when the loads are predictable, rear loading works for the equipment, and front-loading capability isn't necessary.
A mechanical detachable gooseneck allows the neck to separate from the trailer so equipment can be loaded over the front of the deck.
That can provide a more favorable approach for excavators, dozers, and other heavy machinery with limited ground clearance.
Unlike a hydraulic detachable gooseneck, the mechanical configuration doesn't rely on a hydraulic detachable system to perform the same basic job. For the right operation, that provides front-loading capability with a different level of mechanical complexity.
The exact process for detaching, loading, and reconnecting varies by design, which is why two mechanical goosenecks shouldn't be compared on capacity alone.
Main-deck dimensions, loaded deck height, ground clearance, neck design, axle configuration, and tractor compatibility still determine how useful the trailer will be in the field.
Hydraulic detachable gooseneck trailers, commonly referred to as HDGs or RGNs, use hydraulics to assist with the neck during the detach and reconnect process. With the neck detached, equipment can be loaded from the front.
That capability is particularly valuable for operations that frequently load excavators, dozers, cranes and crane components, industrial machinery, transformers, and other heavy or oversize loads.
For fleets loading and unloading regularly, the difference isn't simply convenience. Loading procedure and turnaround time become operational considerations.
Hydraulic detachable trailers can also be configured for substantially different jobs. Depending on the application, operators may be comparing tandem, triaxle, quad, 3+1, or larger multi-axle arrangements rather than simply choosing an "RGN."
Manufacturers including Alpha HD, Kalyn Siebert, XL Specialized, and Fontaine offer equipment for the heavy-haul market across a range of configurations. The manufacturer matters, but only after the required configuration has been established.
Extendable isn't another neck type.
It's a deck configuration that can be combined with different neck designs. An extendable heavy-haul trailer may, for example, use a hydraulic or mechanical detachable gooseneck.
The defining feature is the ability to increase usable deck length when a load exceeds the dimensions of a standard well.
That makes extendable configurations relevant for long industrial equipment, aerospace components, wind energy components, structural loads, and other oversize freight where length, not simply weight, is the challenge.
But maximum extension is only part of the equation.
As the load and trailer get longer, axle placement and spacing, weight distribution, ground clearance, turning characteristics, and route requirements become increasingly important. An extendable trailer still has to work as a complete heavy-haul configuration, not simply provide enough deck to fit the load.
Lowboy Specs That Matter Beyond CapacityOnce you've identified the general neck and deck configuration, the specifications start to matter much more.
A lower loaded deck height provides additional room for tall equipment and can help control overall loaded height. When you're moving a tall excavator, crane component, or other oversize load, a few inches at the deck can matter.
The well needs to accommodate the equipment while allowing it to be positioned correctly for weight distribution. When the required length exceeds a standard well, that's when an extendable configuration enters the conversation.
Lower isn't always better.
Ground clearance still matters when navigating jobsites, railroad crossings, uneven surfaces, and transitions. A very low deck may provide valuable vertical clearance while creating compromises elsewhere in the operation.
Heavy-haul decks are commonly available in widths from approximately 96 to 120 inches, depending on configuration and application. Equipment width, outriggers, and permitting requirements all need to be considered when determining the appropriate setup.
The trailer has to work with the tractor pulling it.
Fifth-wheel height and swing clearance should be evaluated when matching a lowboy to an existing truck or fleet, particularly when comparing trailers with different neck designs.
A capacity rating doesn't tell the whole story.
Tandem, triaxle, quad, 3+1, and larger multi-axle configurations address different weight-distribution requirements. Depending on the load, the overall setup may also incorporate a flip axle, jeep dolly, spreader, or other components.
Axle spacing matters because allowable weight isn't determined by gross weight alone. The Federal Highway Administration's Bridge Formula guidance explains how the number of axles and the distance between them affect allowable weight on groups of axles operating on the Interstate System.
For heavy-haul operators, that's an important distinction: the tonnage rating tells you what the trailer is engineered to carry, while the axle configuration, spacing, route, and applicable regulations help determine how that load can actually be transported.
Instead of comparing every available lowboy, eliminate the configurations that don't fit the work.
Start with your heaviest, tallest, and longest recurring loads. Determine the deck height, well length, ground clearance, and axle configuration those loads require. Then consider the loading process.
If rear loading works consistently, a fixed-neck configuration may deserve consideration. If equipment needs to be loaded from the front, the decision shifts toward mechanical or hydraulic detachable designs. If load length regularly exceeds a standard well, extendability becomes another requirement rather than a separate choice of neck type.
Loading frequency can help narrow the decision further. An operation loading occasionally may weigh mechanical simplicity differently than a fleet cycling equipment on and off trailers throughout the week.
Only after those requirements are established does comparing manufacturers become especially useful.
